Wellness Vaccination Programs
Our wellness and vaccine programs are designed to prevent disease and prolong the lives of your companion animals. The basis of any wellness program is the complete and thorough physical exam. Physical exams include a rectal temperature check, ear exam with an otoscope, oral exam, heart auscultation, skin and eye exam and a regional lymph node palpation. After determining the animal is in good health, a vaccine protocol, suitable to the animal’s lifestyle, will be administered. Any other concerns can be addressed at this time and further testing if necessary.
Puppy Wellness
Our puppy wellness program is designed to offer your new puppy all the benefits
of veterinary services available to him / her from 6 to 16 weeks of age. Included in this service is a series of examinations and vaccinations including distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, parainfluenza, corona virus, and if necessary a leptospirosis vaccine. Other important vaccines include Bordetella bronchiseptica, also known as Kennel Cough, and the most important Rabies vaccine. An internal parasite exam will be performed by fecal centrifugation and treated accordingly based on the results. Although some worms are visible to the naked eye, most worm burdens are diagnosed by examining the stool of your puppy microscopically. Puppies will also be started on a heartworm prevention at this time.
Kitten Wellness
Our kitten wellness program is designed to offer your new kitten all the benefits of veterinary services available to him / or her from 8 to 16 weeks of age. It is our recommendation all kittens be tested for Feline Leukemia and kittens over the age of six months be tested for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. Upon negative results of these test we recommend a series of vaccines that include Feline Leukemia, Calici Virus, Rhinotracheitis, Panleukopenia and Chlamydia Psittaci and of course the important Rabies vaccine. In addition your kitten will be tested for intestinal parasites by fecal centrifugation and be treated accordingly.

Our knowledgeable staff and our facilities allow us to deal with a variety of medical conditions your pet may experience. We hope we do not have to see you or your pet for an emergency but if we do, we are equipped to handle the situation. In some cases, your pet may require hospitalization and further diagnostic tests. Cardiology – the study of the heart
A heart problem can affect your pet at any age although it is more often found in older pets. Heart failure occurs when the heart no longer has the ability to effectively pump blood through the body. Heart failure can lead to a condition known as congestive heart failure. Animals suffering from congestive heart failure often experience difficulty breathing, heavy panting, coughing and exercise intolerance. Animals in more developed heart disease will exhibit other clinical signs such as fluid retention in the abdomen and ataxia and eventually death. Some causes of heart failure include: congenital heart disease (animals born with a heart problem), valvular heart disease (abnormalities of the valves of the heart), heartworm disease, and arrythmias (rhythm disturbances). Many heart problems can be identified on physical examination. Additional tests are usually required to accurately identify the cause of the heart disease. Additional tests include EKGs (electrocardiograms), radiographs (X-rays), and ultrasounds. Heart disease is a serious life threatening condition but early diagnosis and appropriate therapy can extend your pet’s life.
Dermatology – the study of the skin
Skin disease is a frequently observed problem in dogs and cats. Diagnosing a skin
problem in your pet may simply require an examination by a veterinarian; however, most skin diseases or problems require additional steps to accurately obtain a diagnosis. Additional diagnostic procedures may include blood work, urinalysis, skin scraping, biopsies, and / or cultures, etc. The cause of skin problems range from hormonal disorders to the common flea. Should you notice any excessive itching, loss of hair, redness or thickening of the skin, color change of the skin and / or the presence of scabs or scales it may be necessary to make an appointment.
Dentisty
According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have oral disease by the age of three. It is the most frequently diagnosed health problem in pets. Common signs of oral disease include tartar buildup, red and swollen gums, bad breath, changes in eating or chewing habits, pawing at the face and generalized depression. Ignoring these clinical signs may result in deterioration of the soft tissue and bone surrounding the teeth. This decay results in irreversible periodontal disease and even tooth loss. Bacteria in the mouth can enter the blood stream and cause serious kidney infections, liver disease, lung disease, and heart valve disease. We can recommend and demonstrate preventative measures for owners to begin at home in order to avoid costly dental procedures.
Endocrinology – the study of hormones
Several common endocrine disorders are found in dogs and cats with varying clinical signs. These signs include (but are not limited to) the following: abnormal energy levels, abnormal behavior, abnormal drinking, urinating and eating, excessive panting, skin disorders such as hair loss, thickening or discoloring of the skin, and weight gain or loss. Diagnosis of an endocrine disorder may require multiple blood tests at an off site lab. Radiology – the study of medical radiology
Radiology and ultrasound are types of diagnostic imaging routinely used to provide valuable information about a pet’s condition. Both are used to evaluate the condition of an animals gastrointestinal tract (stomach, intestines, colon), respiratory tract (lungs), heart, skeletal and genitourinary system (bladder, prostate). They can be used alone or in conjunction with other diagnostic tools to provide a list of possible causes for a pet’s condition or to rule out other diseases.
External parasite control
Common external parasites in the dog and cat are the flea and the tick. Living in the south with hot an humid temperatures requires year round prevention of fleas and ticks. Understanding the prevention and control of external parasites can be a daunting task. We will gladly assist you in this process. We can provide you with safe and effective flea and tick prevention. Heartworm Prevention
- It is the recommendation of the veterinarians at Leesburg Animal Hosptial all dogs and cats be put on monthly heartworm prevention. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes and if left untreated cause congestive heart failure in dogs and eventually death. Heartworms are easily prevented by tasty tablets or topicals which are easy to administer. Recommended preventatives are listed below:

Nutritional Counseling
Having attended the Hill’s Nutrition Symposium on Evidence based Nutrition at the Hill’s research facility in Topeka, Kansas, Dr. Haley believes that Hill’s/Science Diet is the best possible nutrition available to dogs and cats. Clients often have questions about nutrition and what pets of different ages or different illnesses should eat and Dr. Haley is happy to provide a nutritional consultation with any physical exam at no additional charge. Surgical Services
We provide full surgical services at our clinic including routine spay and neuters,
soft-tissue, and orthopedic surgeries. Most of our routine surgeries only require a one night stay. Animals having surgery need to be at the hospital no later than 8:30 the morning of surgery and should not be fed after 10 p.m. the night before. For convenience animals can be dropped off the previous evening. It is the recommendation of the veterinarians all animals should undergo pre-anesthetic bloodwork before being taken to surgery. Routine bloodwork consists of a complete blood count and chemistry panel which will evaluate the condition of the animal and help determine if he or she is healthy enough for surgery. It is also the recommendation all animals have intravenous fluids during surgery for renal and vascular support. All surgeries are scheduled to be completed by noon and will be discharged the following day as early as 10 am. Please make an appointment for elected surgeries. All surgeries are performed using our Cutting Edge Laser. The benefits of laser surgery are tremendous. Animals will experience less pain, bleeding and swelling, will have reduced risk of infection and a quicker recovery time when the use of a laser is instituted in the surgery room.

Anesthesia & Patient Monitoring
Anesthesia and patient monitoring varies greatly among the needs of patients. Many procedures can be done under tranquilization which may or may not be combined with local anesthesia. Other lengthy procedures require gas anesthesia. During all surgeries animals are monitored by a blood pressure monitor, EKG and pulse oximetry.
Pain Management and Control
We know the issue of pain management is of great concern to pet owners today. As in human medicine, we have a variety of medications available to manage your pet’s pain both before and after surgery and in the event of trauma. We would be pleased to discuss the options available to you and your pet under any of the above circumstances.
Laser Therapy
Laser therapy is an effective, non-surgical way to help alleviate pain in animals. Common conditions where laser thearpy may be instituted are arthritis, acute and chronic pain, back injuries, sprains and strains, ear infections, healing wounds, and post operative pain. The benefits of laser therapy are that it is non-surgical, no sedation and very little restraint needed, extremely safe, no side effects, and works well with other treatment modalities.
Boarding
Clients will have the added benefit of knowing that if their animal experiences any illness while they are away, it will be promptly and competently addressed by one of our clinicians. We have separate dog and cat facilities to provide pets with a comfortable stay while their owners are away. We will feed any specialized or prescription diets that may be required as well as medicate any animals. We have a private room for cats and a grassy, fenced-in yard for exercising dogs. To see our boarding facilities, please feel free to make an appointment for a guided tour. Our facilities will accommodate a large number of animals, but during major holidays it is common to be at full capacity. In order to ensure your pet a spot please call for a reservation.
Microchip Pet Identification
The Home Again microchip is a chip about the size of a grain of rice that is inserted beneath the skin using a large gauge needle. A mild amount of discomfort is expected due the size of the needle, so some owners will elect to have the chip inserted under general anesthesia. Often owners will decide to have this done during routine dentals, or other procedures requiring anesthesia, so that no additional fee for anesthesia will be charged. Leesburg Animal Hospital is a proponent of the Home Again Microchip. All animals should have an outside pet identification tag or Rabies vaccination tag and a Home Again Microchip for added assurance your pet will return home in the event he is lost.
